Visakhapatnam is a coastal, port city, often called “The Jewel of the East Coast”, situated in the Andhra Pradesh, located on the eastern shore of India, and nestled among the hills of the Eastern Ghats and facing the Bay of Bengal to the east.
It is the second largest city in Andhra Pradesh with an area of 550 km²; it is primarily an industrial city, apart from being a port city. It is also home to the Eastern Naval Command. The district was situated between 81º 06′ and 83º 31’E, of the eastern longitudes and 17º 15′ and 18º 32’N, of northern latitudes.
The boundaries of this district are Bay of Bengal in the East, East Godavari district in the South, Orissa state in the West and North directions.
The district has population of 42, 88,113 as per the 2011 census which accounts for 5.06% of the total population of the State with 11.89% decadal growth.
